چکیده

This report examines the major characteristics of Sinhala language related to Phonetics and Phonology. The main topics under study are Segmental and Supra-segmental sounds in Spoken Sinhala. The first part presents Sinhala Phonemic Inventory, which describes phonemes with their associated features and phonotactics of Sinhala. Supra-segmental features like Syllabification, Stress, Pitch and Intonation, followed by the procedure for letter to sound conversion are described in the latter part. The research on Syllabification leads to the identification of set of rules for syllabifying a given word. The syllabication algorithm achieved an accuracy of 99.95%. Due to the phonetic nature of the Sinhala alphabet, the letter-to-phoneme mapping was easily done, however to produce the correct phonetized version of a word, some modifications were needed to be done. The Letter-to-sound conversion algorithm written for this purpose yields an accuracy of 98.21%. The study carried out on stress assignment revealed that word level stress is fixed in the first syllable. Generally, the long vowels are also stressed.

On the Relationship between Phonology and Phonetics (or Why Phonetics Is Not Phonology)

In this presentation, I argue that unifying phonetics and phonology in the grammar has undesirable consequences. Evidence for this position is provided from various sources, but focuses on intonation, an area of linguistic structure that has often been viewed as not requiring an abstract phonological representation.

Phonetics and Phonology then , and then , and now 1

Phonetics attempts to describe and understand how speech is produced and perceived; phonology attempts to understand the patterning—in general, the behavior—of speech sounds in particular languages and in all languages. Is phonetics part of phonology? This straightforward question has received various answers at different points in the history of linguistics. In this paper I attempt to document...

The Phonetics-Phonology Interface

To bridge the gap between the dissimilar mechanisms and entities of the phonological grammar and those of the phonetic mechanisms for producing and perceiving speech, the ‘phonetics-phonology interface’ (PPI) has been invoked. In this brief presentation, an introduction to the ICPhS 2003 Symposium on The Phonetics-Phonology Interface, I present an exegesis and taxonomy of the PPI and some citat...

Dynamics in grammar: comment on Ladd and Ernestus & Baayen*

The derivational view of phonetics-phonology (Ladd, this volume) expresses an intuition that seems valid, namely, that there is a distinction to be made between quantitative and qualitative aspects of phonetics-phonology. Incomplete neutralization (Ernestus and Baayen, this volume) and other phenomena like it indicate that the specific way of drawing that distinction is too rigid. At the same t...

Autonomy, as soon as possible

To explain my thoughts on this, I will report the highlights of the research I have been carrying out into (1) how children learn to talk and (2) why, therefore, the phonetics/phonology of English in mature speakers is the way that it is. I will then relate this to L2 learners, in order to ask what we can realistically expect students to do on their own, with and without help from technology, a...
